7 Patterns in Black Friday Shopping Behaviour Every Retail Brand Needs to Know

Black Friday isn't a one day event anymore. It's a six to eight week window where shopper attention, ad costs, and competitor activity all spike at once, and the brands that win are the ones who started planning months ago, not the week before.

At SHC, we work with retail and e-commerce clients across performance media and content production, and every year we see the same pattern: the businesses that treat Black Friday as a "campaign" rather than a "season" leave money on the table. In part 1 of our Black Friday content we cover all you need to know on shopper behaviour.

What's Actually Changing in Shopper Behaviour This Year?

Once a one day event - Black Friday has evolved for businesses trying to drive returns and shoppers trying to get the best deals ahead of Christmas.

Here are some important things we know about Black Friday shopping that will influence campaign planning:

  1. The event has stretched into a season. UK retailers have been extending promotions well beyond the Friday itself, with some campaigns now starting as early as late October, partly to capture early-bird shoppers and partly to spread demand and logistical pressure across a longer window.

  2. Shoppers are planning ahead, not buying on impulse. Cost of living pressure has turned Black Friday into a strategic budgeting moment rather than a day of spontaneous spending. Many shoppers are consciously holding off on purchases earlier in the year specifically to buy during known discount periods, and a large share now treat Black Friday as their main opportunity to get ahead on Christmas gifting rather than a separate event.

  3. Trust in discounts is under real pressure. Rising scepticism about inflated "was/now" pricing and fake discounts is a genuine threat to credibility this year. Retailers who show clear, verifiable pricing history are earning more trust, and more sales than those relying on big percentage claims alone.

  4. Flexible payment is influencing bigger purchases. Buy Now, Pay Later options continue to grow in popularity as a way for budget-conscious shoppers to justify higher value purchases, providing clear messaging at checkout and in ads a genuine conversion lever rather than a nice to have.

  5. Demographics are shifting. Younger shoppers (25–34) remain the most likely to deliberately wait for Black Friday to make big purchases, but over-55s are a fast-growing and currently under-targeted segment, a real opportunity for brands willing to tailor messaging beyond the usual younger skewing creative.

  6. Social and creator-led commerce is no longer a side channel. Platforms like TikTok have moved from novelty to a genuine sales engine during peak periods, with live shopping and creator led content converting at markedly higher rates than standard social ads. Shoppers increasingly trust native content  with a review of products over a traditional polished ad. For brands with any kind of UGC or creator strategy, this is exactly the moment that investment pays back.

  7. Paid search still carries real weight. Even amid all the social commerce growth, paid search remains one of the single biggest sales drivers during Cyber Week, so it shouldn't be deprioritised in favour of newer channels, the two should work together.

In a nutshell: shoppers are more deliberate, more price savvy, more spread across channels, and more influenced by trust and authenticity than ever before. That has real implications for how brands should plan.

In part two of this series, we cover exactly what to do about it from an advertising perspective. Think strategy, creative planning, audience messaging, budget pacing, and more.
